Join Mother Earth for Earth Hour 2008
What are you doing THIS Saturday night?
Seriously!
Saturday March 29th from 8 PM to 9 PM we are turning off all of our non-essential electricity in honor of Earth Hour.
As a matter of fact Chicago is the flagship city leading the world in this effort.

If I could invite you all over -- we'd twinkle the place with candlelight, enjoy a glass of wine and have some wonderfully stimulating conversation.
I would.
Especially if we could then share all that we spoke about with those we know and care about and cultivate a plan to step up own individual or collective efforts regarding global warming.
You can participate however in your very own way, by shutting it all down for just one hour. Give pause, give commentary, or give your neighbor a hug, however it all works out. Let it be a kumbaya moment, let it be 60 minutes of peace and harmony.
Let it simply be dark.
Tell everyone you know to get dark too.

wonderful - the more that share the better
15 yrs ago i would have thought of the put the kids to bed early gig too - mine were in bed by 7:30 - when daylight savings hit I got very savvy at saying - the clock says it's time for bed, who cares if its not dark outside!! Its a wonder they let me get away with that.

Hey Karen. I'll be there between 8 and 9 on Saturday - albeit my hour will be before your hour ( but it will still be dark!!)Well done Chicago. I just spent a few days in Dubai and itis being widely promoted there too. Their hour will be before either of our hours. We don't really do skyscrapers here in Scotland . I imagine it can make a huge impact seeing even one massive, tall building with the lights off even for that short while.

Hi Karen
Since I posted my comment I have been thinking some more about doing something
or the planet and the conflicts that sometimes throws up.
I mentioned I had been in Dubai earlier this week. My husband, daughter and I
went for a short break. For some that would be wasteful and my airmiles equate
to a large carbon footprint. For me I like to travel, experience the culture
of others and in turn this helps me understand where I fit in the world.
My husband and I usually have a short holiday before Christmas each year in
the Caribbean. The economy of each of the islands we have visited depend
heavily on tourism and we contribute to that. Just as visitors from round the
world who choose to come to Scotland do for us - the tourism £/$ is important
to so many countries.
Here in the UK we are currently having a huge national debate on the use of
plastic bags. I have been carrying a canvas bag with me for some time now for
smaller purchases and we have invested in "bags for life" for larger shopping
trips. It will make a difference. In Dubai the same debate is raging and
people there also seem to be taking positive action - the world becomes a
smaller place through individual actions.
So when others are on the same page let's rejoice- and when they are at odds
with what we believe/do let's understand but not give up trying to persuade on
the benefits by just doing it anyway.
A whole hour without TV - bliss ( for you and me obviously) and nightmare for
many others. :-)

hey jackie --- i love it - a kindred spirit, thank you for this commentary. I too have taken on small steps, some are odd to others, but I have always
marched a little different - do you do any carbon offset activites re: your travel ? I am very excited about the anti-plastic bag campaign, although a
every small part of me wonders what families livelihoods are supported by that
industry - if i was the owner of that company I'd be pretty darn frustrated - one day you're in business , the next the entire world is boycotting your product - yikes!
